BlipTalk with tRasH cAn maN

Sprung from the fascination of raw, hard waveform synthesis, chip tune artist tRasH cAn maN started out in 2001 with but a single Nintendo Game Boy running the software LSDj. In his music he seems to cram the very last drop of juice from heavily stressed chip as ecstatic beats are mixed with quasi intellectual melodies and percussive noise. On stage he has been seen combining chip with anything from vocals, electric guitar, forks and spoons, circuit bent and a good sense of humor.

Blip: Before you got into making chip music, what type of music or art where you into?

I have traveled through many genres over the years as a guitarist and keyboardist. From thrash metal to bossanova, 60′ies pop to ambient noise, etc.

Blip: How did you first become aware of the possibility of chip music?

I stumbled upon the Amiga software Pro Tracker in the late 80′ies and fell in love with the neat work-flow of trackers and the vast range ST-XX sample disks! A year or so later I advanced to an Atari 1040ST running Steinberg Pro24 with my Roland MT-32. The years to come I expanded my home studio with bits and pieces of gear and synthesizers but it wasn’t until 2001, when a friend of mine told me he read about a software which allowed you to make music on Nintendo Gameboy, that I came in contact with trackers again and what was to be known as chip music. Needless to say, LSDj had a major impact on me and I’ve been using it on and off ever since.

Blip: How does your background influence your current work?

I believe old computer games has the greatest influence over my chip music. It’s seems that it’s just happening when I’m in front of a music tracker. The timbres of the low-bit sounds is subconsciously forcing me to make certain kinds of melodies.

Blip: Where do you see yourself in the greater chip community?

As almost forgotten about. lol! The chip community has literally exploded since I started out with a vast amount of talented artists. So let’s face it, if you haven’t released something in years, you’re bound to fall under the category ‘unknown’. But that’s all going to change!

Blip: Who are you most excited to see at blip? Why?

There are so many great artists attending that I can’t possibly pick one. I’m so thrilled to attend the Blip festival I can hardly wait!

tRasH cAn maN is playing Saturday at 8:40 with visuals by Jean Y. Kim & Paris
